Background of the Study

Cardiac emergencies, including acute myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure, and arrhythmias, pose significant public health challenges in Nigeria. As one of the most common causes of death globally, the proper management of cardiac emergencies is crucial for reducing mortality and morbidity (Adegoke & Aluko, 2024). Nurses play an essential role in emergency cardiac care, often acting as the first point of contact for patients experiencing symptoms of cardiac distress (Olaniyi et al., 2023). In Kogi State, like many regions in Nigeria, the healthcare system faces several challenges that can hinder the effectiveness of emergency cardiac care, such as inadequate resources, a shortage of specialized staff, and limited access to advanced medical equipment (Nwodo et al., 2024).

Despite the critical role of nurses in managing cardiac emergencies, there is limited research on the specific challenges they face in providing care in Kogi State. Nurses are responsible for rapid assessment, administration of medications, monitoring of vital signs, and preparation for advanced interventions, all of which require a high level of expertise and swift decision-making. However, issues such as insufficient training, lack of proper equipment, and poor infrastructure can impede their ability to deliver optimal care (Olusegun et al., 2023). This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by nurses in providing emergency cardiac care in Kogi State, with the goal of identifying factors that hinder effective care and suggesting ways to improve emergency cardiac services.

Statement of the Problem

In Kogi State, emergency cardiac care is a critical area of healthcare due to the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases. While nurses are essential in the management of cardiac emergencies, they face numerous challenges that affect their ability to deliver high-quality care. Issues such as limited resources, inadequate training, poor healthcare infrastructure, and understaffing contribute to delays in care and suboptimal patient outcomes (Ayoade et al., 2024). Addressing these challenges is vital for improving the quality of emergency cardiac care in the state and ensuring better outcomes for patients experiencing cardiac emergencies.

Despite the importance of this issue, there is limited research examining the specific challenges faced by nurses in this context. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the factors that impact the ability of nurses in Kogi State to provide timely and effective cardiac care in emergency situations.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing emergency cardiac care in Kogi State.

2. To assess the impact of these challenges on the quality of emergency cardiac care delivered in Kogi State.

3. To explore potential solutions to improve emergency cardiac care in Kogi State.

Research Questions

1. What are the challenges faced by nurses in providing emergency cardiac care in Kogi State?

2. How do these challenges affect the quality of care provided to patients in cardiac emergencies in Kogi State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to address the challenges faced by nurses in emergency cardiac care in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kogi State face significant challenges that impact the quality of emergency cardiac care they provide.

2. There is a significant relationship between the availability of resources and the quality of emergency cardiac care provided by nurses in Kogi State.

3. Nurse training and professional development significantly influence the effectiveness of emergency cardiac care in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses working in hospitals and healthcare facilities that provide emergency cardiac care in Kogi State. It will examine the challenges they face and how these challenges affect the quality of care provided. Limitations include the potential for participant bias, as nurses may be reluctant to report certain challenges, and the study will not cover every healthcare facility in the state, limiting the generalizability of the findings.

Definitions of Terms

• Emergency Cardiac Care: The immediate medical intervention provided to patients experiencing acute cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks, arrhythmias, and heart failure.

• Nurses: Registered nurses working in hospitals and healthcare facilities involved in emergency cardiac care.

• Challenges: Barriers or obstacles that hinder nurses’ ability to provide optimal care in emergency cardiac situations.
